Japan planned to purchase 42 F-35 fighters. Japan Air Self-Defense Force's first Lightning II, the F-35A 69-8701, made its first flight on August 24, 2016. A total of four F-35As belonging to the JASDF are currently undergoing training in the U.S. The first F-35A assembled by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan has also rolled off production line in February 2017.
